In short, this means the flights occur outside of regularly scheduled times, and they are set up for a specific customer. Some of the major airlines will offer this service, despite the fact that they generally do not advertise as charter carriers.

Most often charter plane services transport small groups of passengers to a prearranged activity or destination. Occasionally, members of sports teams and companies use charter jet services, as well. Even military personnel have been known to book charter flights. Nonetheless, the majority of charter flights still cater to specific functions.

The charter company is usually not responsible for selling tickets. Instead, the holiday companies handle ticket sales, and most of these charter flights are a package deal. As part of a holiday set-up, the package includes the price of the ticket, along with accommodations and other services. Occasionally, people want to travel to the destination but do not want all the amenities. They have the option of purchasing a 'flight-only' package, at a cost that is usually less expensive than if they had booked on a scheduled airline.

Charter plane services normally books far in advance, as opposed to scheduled flights, which allow customers to purchase tickets right up to the departure time. Recently, however, some charter companies have started opening ticket sales to the public. This allows them to sell empty seats, making the flight more cost-effective, and it can provide the flyer with a great deal.

Unfortunately, comparative shopping engines do not include charter fares, but many people are currently using the Internet to book their charter flights. In fact, Internet bookings for charter flights are catching up with bookings for scheduled flights. One advantage of a charter flight is the ability to provide service to small and medium-sized airports, which cannot support larger planes or traffic. This provides service in areas that might otherwise have none at all.
